Style has always been a part of my life. Growing up in my Latino neighborhood, where taking pride in your appearance is a cultural value, it wasn’t uncommon to see women dressed to the nines on any given day.
As a very little girl, I always aspired to have the suited flare of my big sister and especially my mami. I remember tagging along with my mom to go shopping and there was one particularly popular clothing store that had only one large fitting room where all women changed amongst each other. I vividly remember studying all of the mujeres, including my mom, trying on clothes and practically dissecting the fit of the garment on their frame. I could see it in their eyes how they would try to envision how they could nip and tuck the fabric here and there to make them look like a million bucks. They were masters in figuring out what pieces complimented their body. I saw my mom sometimes simply look at an outfit and be able to judge if it worked for her body or not.
As I entered my teens, I went from watching my mom alter clothes to becoming a student of high fashion. My big sister, 10 years my senior, was not looking to get behind a sewing machine to alter clothes; she was strictly about high-end designer quality and fit. By the time she was 20, she was strutting around in everything from Gucci to Plein Sud, and I was feverishly taking notes on who was who. As luck would have it, by the time I was in my late teens, we were the same size (in shoes too!), so let’s just say, I was killing the block with the trendiest of wears.
You see, my knowledge of high-end design and expertise in fit came from an amalgamation of my mom and sis. Learning from these two strong, beautiful, and stylish mujeres made me a natural on knowing what looks good, but it also made it the fabric of my life.
